Think you know all about your favorite animated car hero? You’ll be surprised to know what kind of car Lightning McQueen is in real life!  The series Cars on the Road,  developed by Pixar for Disney+, will hit our screens in September. That’s inspired a walk down nostalgia lane for all Lightning McQueen fans. Here’s all you need to know about everyone’s favorite little red car.

Who doesn’t love the story of an ace rookie who gets schooled in some life lessons? The Cars franchise – which does just that – is one of Disney-Pixar’s most beloved creations. Set in a world of anthropomorphic talking cars, it introduces us to the arrogant, self-centered, and brash race car Lightning McQueen, who gets a crash course (we just couldn’t help it) in sportsmanship!

Considering the hundreds of cars that make their appearance in the franchise, you’re likely to wonder – what kind of car is Lightning McQueen based on? The answer is more complicated than you think!

Who (or what) is Lightning McQueen?

Lightning McQueen is the protagonist of Pixar’s Cars franchise, which is set in a world of anthropomorphic talking cars. Voiced by Owen Wilson, McQueen is a rookie race car competing in the Piston Cup Circuit (modeled on the real-world NASCAR Circuit). He is known for his signature catchphrase “Ka-chow!” which he utters every time he impresses the crowd with his driving skills!

At the start of the franchise, McQueen is a cocky, brash, and over-confident challenger, trying to outsmart the reigning champions and make a name for himself. However, he soon realizes that his selfish nature has driven away all his friends. With a little help from legendary racer ‘Doc’ Hudson Hornet, he regains his confidence, goes through a Karate Kid-esque training montage, makes a bunch of new friends, and eventually redeems his image as an ace driver.

What type of car is Lightning McQueen?

In the movies, Lightning McQueen is depicted as a red race car with yellow lightning bolts on the sides. He has NASCAR-style wheels, a rear spoiler, and the number 95 painted in orange on his body. The NASCAR design is pretty obvious, given that the franchise is themed on racing. However, the actual design of the character isn’t that obvious at the outset, leaving fans wondering – what car is Lightning McQueen based on in real life?

Apparently, the animators at Pixar drew influences from many sources to create McQueen’s final design. However, the two major car models he is based on are – the Chevrolet Corvette C1 (produced between 1953-1962) and the Chevrolet Corvette C6 (produced between 2004-2013).

Car models that inspired Lightning McQueen’s design

Chevrolet Corvette C1

The Corvette C1 was introduced in 1953 and was the first in a series of sports cars from Chevrolet. It debuted at the General Motors Motorama event held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The C1 was a roadster (an open-top car with only two seats) with a six-cylinder engine and 115 HP. The outer body was fashioned using glass-fiber-reinforced plastic and had a classic red-and-white color scheme. During its run, the price of the C1 reached as high as $4000.

It’s easy to see that it is one of the big inspirations for Lightning McQueen’s design!

While lifting a few traditional elements from the C1, Pixar also ensured McQueen’s design would appeal to the younger generation by turning to the Corvette C6. First introduced in 2004 at the Detroit Auto Show, it showcased a slick design, an upgraded suspension, and a bigger engine than the C5.  It was produced between 2005-2013 and sold for an average price of $47,000. It also had both coupe and convertible models, besides being the first model since 1962 to have exposed headlights.
