Complete Guide to the Nissan S15: All You Need to Know

Share

You’ve probably noticed the Nissan S15 in the Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift. One of the all-time greats when it comes to drift cars, the Nissan Silvia S15 is a beauty, a sleek masterpiece, if you will. But it’s banned in the US. Why is Nissan Silvia S15 illegal? How fast is a Nissan Silvia S15? We find out!

With its extreme tunability, age-defying aesthetics, and penchant for turning sideways, the Nissan S15 Silvia was every car enthusiast’s dream! However, Americans hoping to purchase an S15 may have to wait a while longer. The cars are now forbidden to be imported or owned in the United States. Anyone caught attempting to import one risks severe penalties, including prison time.

Nissan Silvia Backstory

Nissan is a Japanese car maker founded in 1928 by Yoshisuke Aikawa, and the company has never ceased pushing the boundaries of car manufacturing.

With the Silvia family, life began a bit differently than we know it now. It all began with a precisely finished hand-built coupe based on the Fairlady convertible and unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in September 1964.

The first model, the Datsun 1500, was designed by German designer Albrecht Graf von Schlitz, also known as von Goertz von Wrisberg (try saying that one!). This was then called the Silvia CSP311, and thus a legend was born.

Then in 1975, the S10 was introduced to the world. It was the first Silvia to be mass-produced. This tiny, rear-wheel-drive sports vehicle had a 1.8L L18 inline-4 engine for the Japanese market, built on an all-new S platform. It was also the first Silvia to be mass-produced.

They added a 2.0L L20B engine and rebranded it as the Datsun 200SX for the North American market. The powertrain was shared with the famed Datsun 510, although the rear suspension was leaf springs rather than the 510’s upgraded independent suspension.

The Nissan Silvia S15 200SX is born

The S15 arrived in 1999 with a remarkable 247bhp at 6,400rpm and 203 ft/lb torque from the most powerful inline-four SR20DET to date.

The additional power was mostly due to a ball-bearing update in the turbocharger and engine management changes. A 163hp SR20DE variant was also introduced.

With a fully overhauled appearance, the S15 clearly stood out among its older cousins. In addition, it boasted an aggressive style to meet the trends of the time. We personally think it did a fairly excellent job surpassing them!

Taking the S14’s Japanese tax width difficulties into consideration, the body proportions were decreased, returning it to the small class and probably helping its Japanese sales.

This model was only available in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand but shipped to most other countries with the exclusion of the United States.

  • Autech, a Nissan subsidiary, specialized in modifying the basic Nissan for Japanese consumers. The exhaust and engine of the Autech S15 have been modified to make it far quicker than the Spec-S and Spec-R models, although they are extremely rare.
  • Varietta is a distinct variant of the S15. This model of the automobile has an electric hardtop roof. Except for the convertible top, the automobile was similar to the Spec-S variant in every other respect. Variettas are the rarest S15 variant; only 1,143 were ever produced.

What’s the difference between the Spec-R and the Spec-S models?

The Spec-R was the most desirable model in the S15 lineup, with either a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The biggest difference between the JDM Spec-R and the Spec-S was the Spec-247bhp R’s turbocharged SR20DET engine, whereas the Spec-S received the underwhelming 163bhp SR20DET engine.

How fast is a Nissan Silvia S15?

The Nissan Silvia S15 Spec R can hit a top speed of 155 mph (or 249.4 kph).

Why is the S15 so popular?

  • The Nissan S15 has an instantly identifiable distinctive, streamlined style.
  • Car lovers like the lightweight chassis mixed with the strong engine, which makes maneuvering them a breeze.
  • They became famous (or maybe notorious) for their usage in drifting competitions—three-time Formula D winner James Deane drove an S15 to the Championships in his debut year.
  • Nissan S15s are popular among hobbyists because they are simple to alter, with changes like engine modifications and additional suspension.

Are Silvia S15s legal in the United States?

We’re sorry to break the news, but the S15 won’t be allowed in the United States until 2024.

Why is Nissan Silvia S15 illegal?

The Nissan S15 is presently prohibited from being imported into the United States by the Import Vehicle Safety Compliance Act, often known as the 25-Year Rule.

The legislation prohibits importing any automobile that was not first sold in the United States and is less than 25 years old.

Also, these vehicles do not conform to current safety or pollution regulations. Moreover, they are also not old enough to be regarded exempt as vintage vehicles.

What happens if you illegally import a Nissan S15?

Importing a Nissan S15 illegally will result in severe fines, including up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine

The repercussions of breaching the rules have not deterred everyone. In early 2015, a Mississippi man was caught importing an S15 from Australia to the United States. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 20 to 26 months of probation and $18,000 in penalties.

When will the Nissan Silvia S15 be legal?

In January 2024, the 1999 Nissan Silvia S15 will be 25 years old. It will then be exempt from NHTSA restrictions. It will, therefore, be legal to import an S15 into the US once it reaches the age of 25.

Remember, you must verify the particular model year of your automobile. Keep in mind that only 1999 models will be available in 2024. So if your S15 is from the year 2000 or later, you’ll have to wait some more.
