Last week may not have been the best for air travel this summer, even as 13,950 893 passengers took to the skies. This is way more than the numbers in 2020, i.e., 4,897,722, but still less than the figure of 17,707,838 in 2019.
Numbers do seem to be lower than those we saw last week. Concerns about the highly transmissible delta variant might be starting to affect domestic travel demand. However, the slowdown is more likely to be a minor hiccup than the start of a major slump.
Several travelers experienced difficulties due to airline snafus, even as we see a nationwide boom in summer air travel. The highest number of travelers, 2,168,264, passed through TSA checkpoints on Sunday, August 8th.
Thousands of flights were canceled last week alone, with Spirit and American Airlines being among the most hit, leaving passengers stuck at airports around the country and desperately trying to book with other airlines.
It’s not all bad news, though. Delta Air Lines is making it a little easier for passengers when vacation plans change. The airline stated that it will no longer charge change fees for same-day travel changes and will not charge people who attempt to fly standby for an alternate trip. Same-day travel changes can now be made directly on the Fly Delta app within 24 hours of their scheduled departure. The new flight must take off on the same day as the original flight.
In airport parking news, DFW Airport parking is likely to cost more, with the Dallas Fort Worth Airport authorities planning to hike parking rates by $3 a day from October. This seems to be a recurring pattern, with airport parking lots looking to make up for losses of the past year. You might be better off looking at parking options near the airport instead of at the airport. Also, be sure to book your parking spot early enough so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises, such as parking rates being hiked at the last minute. Worrying about parking is the last thing you want to do when you have a flight to catch.
