Weekly airport travelers and parking (June 5 -July 11, 2021)

The good news is that the surge in air traveler numbers shows no signs of slowing down even after the long Independence Day weekend. Leisure travel on US airlines has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Even severely decreased business travel is expected to recover in the fall. Air travel to many overseas destinations remains limited due to limitations. However, United CEO Scott Kirby claimed that trans-Atlantic flying should surpass records by next summer.

After plummeting by more than 95% in the spring of 2020 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, passenger numbers have improved significantly. According to Transportation Security Administration data, about 2 million passengers flew on average every day over the last week, approximately 76% of the similar period in 2019. While this is a significant boost for airlines, it has put the airline sector under considerable pressure and strain. There’s been a slew of cancellations, long security lines, and massive shortages of airport parking spots.

Flyers looking for SJC Airport parking could heave a sigh of relief with the new Economy Parking Garage opening up and offering more parking spots. On the other hand, passengers flying out of Charlotte were in for a rude shock as Charlotte airport parking raised the rates for all its lots and decks to help pay for recent enhancements at the airport. With most official airport parking options seemingly in a state of flux, passengers would do well to prebook their airport parking spot online before they head out to the airport. The earlier you book, the better!
