Passengers thronged airports across the country to make the best of the 4th of July weekend. In fact, according to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) data, the number of Americans traveling through airports during the July 4 long weekend actually exceeded pre-pandemic levels at certain points in time. On two days over the July 4 weekend, the number of travelers screened by TSA actually exceeded pre-pandemic levels, which is the first time this has happened since travel almost ground to a halt during last year! Last Thursday saw 2.15 million persons pass through security checks, while Friday saw 2.2 million, up from 2.09 million and 2.18 million on the same days last year.
According to Tuesday’s TSA checkpoint statistics, well over 10 million individuals were inspected between July 1 and July 5, setting a new post-pandemic record. Overall, air traffic was up to 200% more than it was at this time last year. While this is certainly a reason to cheer for air travel and allied industries, many of them are still struggling to cope with the high demand. Airports are still struggling to cope and airport parking lots are getting sold out in minutes. Philly Airport parking, LAX parking, SeaTac Airport parking, and Fort Lauderdale Airport parking lots saw huge numbers of patrons even as they struggled to accommodate them.
