NYCFC in MLS: 2015 – Present
NYCFC began its MLS journey as the 20th member of the league. The club was announced in 2013 – the first MLS franchise from NYC but second in the New York Metropolitan area, after the New York Red Bulls. NYCFC played their first league game in 2015 against Orlando City at the Citrus Bowl.
Jason Kreis, NYCFC’s first head coach, left after the club finished its debut season almost at the bottom of the league table. Patric Veira replaced Kries and successfully led the team to their first playoffs and runners-up finish in the Supporters’ Sheild standings.
Post Viera’s departure to France, NYCFC saw several player changes, but the club did not make any major progress in the next few seasons. Finally, in 2021, coach Ronny Delia was at the helm when the club lifted their first MLS Cup. It was not only the first MLS championship for New York but also the region’s first sports title after the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI. The last New York soccer team to win a top division final before NYCFC was the Cosmos in the 1983 Soccer Bowl.
Who owns NYCFC?
City Football Group and Yankee Global Enterprises are the New York City FC owners, with an 80 – 20 partnership. In addition, city Football Group owns Manchester City, while Yankee Global Enterprises operates the Yankee Stadium.

Does NYCFC have an academy?
City Football Academy (New York) is NYCFC’s professional training ground in Orangeburg. It’s the third academy built by City Football Group; the other two are in Manchester and Melbourne.
Opened in April 2018, the facility is also New York City FC’s medical and sports sciences hub. The training center is used year-round with under-soil heating for the pitches.

In 2017, NYCSC (New York City Supporters Club) became the City’s second official supporters’ group. However, the club parted ways with the group in 2020 and replaced it with Los Templados #12 in 2022.

Although the stadiums have plenty of on-site parking space, the demand is high on match days. Even with a parking pass, you might have to spend your time before and after the game lined up outside the lots. NYCFC does not operate any stadium lots either.

NYCFC does not offer official parking for their home games and does not set the rates at on-site garages. You can purchase parking passes for most games online; cash lots are limited. It will cost you $15-$30; however, parking rates depend on demand and availability. Bus/RV parking at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium costs $60 per match.

Is tailgating allowed at NYCFC home games?
You can tailgate at Yankee stadium parking lots, but you must follow the rules and the staff’s instructions. However, most fans prefer to hit one of the bars nearby before and after the match.
At the Red Bull Arena, tailgating is prohibited in all lots, including the Harrison Public parking lots. You cannot tailgate in Citi Field Lot A, Lot B, or Lot G/Official Lot. In other lots, tailgating activities are permitted under these rules.
NYCFC Parking Tips:
- At Yankee Stadium, New York City FC parking validation is accepted at the 161st Street Garage. Your other options are the River Avenue Garage and Rupert Plaza Garage.
- Citi Field parking lots open 2.5 hours before kickoff. There are six lots within the fence line and five outside for general parking. The Southfield/Commuter Lot is also open on game days. Bus/Oversized Parking lot (Pork Chop Hill) is west of the Shea Road intersection.
