New York City FC (NYCFC) is one of the most prominent clubs in Major League Soccer. The Eastern Conference team sealed its spot at the top with the 2021 Championship, beating\u00a0<\/span>Portland Timbers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at home in a penalty shootout. This season, NYCFC has made it to the final series playoffs and is\u00a0<\/span>averaging 17,365 in attendance<\/span><\/a>. Although the club hops around from one NYC stadium to another for their home games, nothing stops the fans from following them to the field.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s a quick look at New York City FC in the league so far…\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NYCFC in MLS: 2015 – Present\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

NYCFC began its MLS journey as the\u00a0<\/span>20th member of the league<\/span><\/b>. The club was announced in 2013 \u2013 the first MLS franchise from NYC but second in the New York Metropolitan area, after the\u00a0<\/span>New York Red Bulls<\/span><\/a>. NYCFC played their\u00a0<\/span>first league game in 2015 against Orlando City<\/span><\/b>\u00a0at the Citrus Bowl.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jason Kreis, NYCFC’s first head coach, left after the club finished its debut season almost at the bottom of the league table. Patric Veira replaced Kries and successfully led the team to their first playoffs and runners-up finish in the Supporters’ Sheild standings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Post Viera’s departure to France, NYCFC saw several player changes, but the club did not make any major progress in the next few seasons. Finally, in 2021, coach\u00a0<\/span>Ronny Delia was at the helm when the club lifted their first MLS Cup<\/span><\/b>. It was not only the first MLS championship for New York but also the region’s first sports title after the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI. The last New York soccer team to win a top division final before NYCFC was the Cosmos in the 1983 Soccer Bowl.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
