Atlanta United FC was founded in 2014 and began playing in MLS’s Eastern Conference in 2017. The expansion team became the\u00a0<\/span>22nd member of the league<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and made the playoffs in their very first season. Under head coach Gerardo Martino, the club\u00a0<\/span>lifted the MLS cup in their second season<\/span><\/b>, beating Portland Timbers<\/a> at home. It was the city’s first major championship since the Atlanta Braves won the MLB World Series ’95. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Stadium set a league record for the largest non-doubleheader crowd with 73,019 spectators.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, Frank de Boer replaced Martino as head coach and led Atlanta United to their\u00a0<\/span>first US Open and Campeones Cup wins<\/span><\/b>. However, they did not have much luck on the field in the pandemic-stricken 2020. 2021 was dominated by head coach changes until Gonzalo Pineda was appointed in August. However, the club again made it to the playoffs and got the final berth for the CONCACAF Champions League.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
