Portland Timbers began\u00a0<\/span>playing in Major League Soccer in 2011<\/span><\/strong>, but the club has been around since the 1970s. The professional men’s soccer team first played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and then in the United Soccer League (USL).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Portland Timbers in MSL: 2011 – Present\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Timbers were announced as the\u00a0<\/span>18th MLS team<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0in March 2009 and is a member of the league’s\u00a0<\/span>Western Conference<\/span><\/strong>. However, their first game was on March 19, 2011, against reigning champions Colorado Rapids. The club finished 6th in the Western Conference and 12th in their first MLS season. The 2012 season wasn’t any better, but they won their first Cascadia Cup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, former US U-23 team coach Caleb Porter was appointed head coach. The club finished the season with their first MLS playoff berth. After winning the Western Conference Finals in 2015, Timber became the\u00a0<\/span>first Cascadia Team to lift the MLS Cup<\/span><\/strong>. Midfielder Diego Valeri set a new league record with nine consecutive goals in 2017 and won the Landon Donovan MVP award. Timbers also won their second Cascadia Cup that year. However, coach Porter resigned after the season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Giovanni Savarese came on board as the Portland Timbers’ new head coach in 2018, and the team made the playoffs that season. Though they triumphed over rivals Seattle in the semis, the Timbers fell short of the cup. Renovations at the home stadium marred the team’s chances in 2019, and they finished 6th in the Conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the pandemic, Portland Timbers started strong by\u00a0<\/span>winning the ‘MLS is Back Tournament’ in 2020<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and qualifying for Champions League. Last season, the team continued to impress with a finals berth but lost out 4-2 in penalties to New York City FC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The club’s CEO,\u00a0<\/span>Merritt Paulson<\/span><\/strong>, has the majority stake in Portland Timbers. He also has minority ownership in\u00a0<\/span>Peregrine Sports, LLC, which owns the club’s operating rights<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Peregrine Sports was founded in 2009 \u2013 the same year Portland was awarded the expansion berth to MLS. It operates and promotes athletic clubs and events.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span>Who are the Timbers’ biggest rivals in MLS?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    Portland Timbers,<\/span>\u00a0Vancouver Whitecaps<\/span><\/strong>, and\u00a0<\/span>Seattle Sounders<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0have been rivals since the 70s. All three clubs have played in the original NASL. The rivalry carried over to USL between 2001 and 2008 and continues in the MLS. In 2004, fans created the\u00a0<\/span>Cascadia Cup, where the three soccer clubs compete<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0against each other. The Timbers have won the contest four times \u2013 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Traditionally, there’s no love lost between the Portland Timbers and\u00a0<\/span>LA soccer clubs<\/span><\/strong>. Midfielder Sebastian Blanco remarked in 2020 that LAFC is the Timbers’ biggest non-Cascadia rival.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
