Tesla, Waymo, Cruise, and Alphabet Inc are some of the companies that are developing self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In reality, the term &#8216;self-driving&#8217; is a misnomer, as no car has reached enough sophistication to be completely autonomous. Tesla hopes to achieve some level of autonomous vehicles by 2025.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_features_of_Teslas_Autopilot_System\"><\/span>What are the features of Tesla&#8217;s Autopilot System?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"section-title--dek\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tesla&#8217;s current Autopilot features include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li class=\"section-title--dek\">Navigation Assistance: The system will suggest when to change lanes, optimize routes, and how to avoid traffic.<\/li>\n<li class=\"section-title--dek\">Autosteering: The car&#8217;s system will use advanced sensors and cameras to help you steer, accelerate, and brake automatically.<\/li>\n<li class=\"section-title--dek\">Smart Summon: Helps you navigate closed and complex spaces like parking lots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"section-title--dek\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, Tesla clarifies that all these features are meant to assist the driver &#8211; <strong>it does not make the vehicle autonomous<\/strong>. The software for &#8220;full self-driving&#8221; is also in Beta testing, which means it will be a while before it is available in other models. The Tesla models that offer Autopilot features include the Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Model Y.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_level_of_automation_do_Tesla_cars_have\"><\/span>What level of automation do Tesla cars have?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Currently, all Tesla cars are at<strong> Level 2 automation<\/strong> &#8211; which means they are only partially automated. It requires the driver to remain attentive and engaged on the road, while the car&#8217;s system provides continuous monitoring and assistance for acceleration, braking, steering, and more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.way.com\/way-plus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.way.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1148169_BlogAdBanner_Opt8_970x90px_V01_080921.jpg\" alt=\"How many Tesla crashes have there been\" width=\"970\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_Tesla_crashes_have_there_been\"><\/span>How many Tesla crashes have there been?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Tesla Vehicle Safety Report tries to quantify how many accidents have occurred every quarter with the autopilot engaged. However, it doesn&#8217;t provide exact numbers and uses the distance driven per quarter as a measure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, in 2018 it reported an <strong>average of one crash for every 3.1 million miles<\/strong> driven by Tesla users. This was significantly less than what the National Highway Transport Administration (NHTA) recorded for regular automobiles &#8211; one accident for every 492,000 miles. Since then, Tesla has reported fewer crashes per million miles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2018:<\/strong> 1 accident per 3.1 million miles<\/li>\n<li><strong>2019:<\/strong> 1 accident per 3.38 million milles<\/li>\n<li><strong>2020:<\/strong> 1 accident per 4.31 million miles<\/li>\n<li><strong>2021:<\/strong> 1 accident per 4.47 million miles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you can see, the average distance traveled by Tesla cars between accidents has been increasing, meaning they&#8217;re only becoming safer. It is still too early to tell if any particular company is safer than Tesla. However, what Tesla can do is take a leaf out of Mercedes&#8217; playbook, which recently announced they would take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a39481699\/what-happens-if-mercedes-drivepilot-causes-a-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full legal responsibility when their Drive Pilot is engaged<\/a>.
