Harvey Keitel&#8217;s portrayal of Mr. White in the 1992 film &#8220;Reservoir Dogs&#8221; inspired the chaotic character.<\/p>\n<p>Mayhem, like Mr. White, always wears a suit, but he exudes menace. Mayhem identifies the risk he is showing at the start of the commercial. He provides context for the event and foreshadows an imminent tragedy that he will produce, which then occurs. For example, in a 2015 commercial, Mayhem plays a portable grill that is rapidly carried into a car before it is completely extinguished. This results in an explosion when the still-burning embers ignite a large container of lighter fluid.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-0-0\">When the disaster&#8217;s outcome <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-1-0\">is revealed<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-2-0\">, Mayhem advises that certain &#8220;low-cost&#8221; policies do not cover the predicament he has caused<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-3-0\">. He then encourages viewers to get their insurance policies from Allstate. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-4-0\">Each commercial concludes with Mayhem promising viewers that they will be &#8220;better protected from mayhem&#8230;like me&#8221; if they have Allstate<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-5-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-6-0\">Damage to his clothing and injuries to his person carries over from commercial to commercial<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bckon-7-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mayhem has also recommended against going without roadside assistance in other advertisements. He describes what could happen if one&#8217;s car ran out of fuel while driving in separate advertisements. This includes staying in a creepy roadside motel overnight, changing a tire in a heavy downpour, or staying at an embarrassing family gathering because one&#8217;s car battery died. There&#8217;s also one with possibly becoming a victim of crime due to a breakdown in the wrong neighborhood.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_the_Mayhem_insurance_guy\"><\/span>Who is the Mayhem insurance guy?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dean Winters has played Mayhem since the show&#8217;s inception. The character is the antithesis of Allstate&#8217;s previous campaign, which featured the refined and trustworthy Dennis Haysbert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3o85xvY2bnqZHzxpHG\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/mayhem-dean-winters-allstate-insurance-3o85xvY2bnqZHzxpHG\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Haysbert still appears in Allstate advertisements, but he appeals to an older, more conventional client base, whereas Mayhem appeals to a younger audience.<\/p>\n<p>Successful advertisements by competitors who also used comedy possibly influenced Allstate, as State Farm and Progressive have both spent a lot of money creating funny business mascots, and Allstate decided to crash the party.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_is_Dean_Winters\"><\/span>Who is Dean Winters?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Dean Winters is a 57-year-old actor from New York. He was cast as Mayhem in 2010. But you may have seen him on-screen even before that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xTiTnozy028ihSMRVu\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/mayhem-dean-winters-allstate-insurance-xTiTnozy028ihSMRVu\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winters had already featured in Sex and the City, NYPD Blue, Oz, Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Miami, and 30 Rock<\/strong>, so he was a known face, if not a household one when he was picked to represent Allstate.<\/p>\n<p>Winters continues to work in television after leaving his role as Mayhem. He has also appeared in a few films and often does standup comedy.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Mayhem_actor_did_die_but_hes_doing_much_better_today\"><\/span>The Mayhem actor did die (but he&#8217;s doing much better today)!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Winters became extremely ill with a bacterial illness in June 2009 and was taken to Lennox Hill Hospital after falling at his doctor&#8217;s office. According to HITC, he had a high fever the day before his collapse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winters went into cardiac arrest for two minutes on the way to the hospital, but paramedics could revive him. Thankfully, paramedics revived him.<\/strong> But he spent three weeks in intensive care recovering from the illness. He also underwent ten operations, including amputating two toes and half a thumb because he&#8217;d developed gangrene during his ordeal.<\/p>\n<p>Winters was unable to work for a year due to illness. He&#8217;d just finished filming a pilot for an ABC sitcom called Happy Town. But when it was picked up for a full season, Steven Weber of Wings replaced him. Winters remarked wryly that folks in LA thought he was dead! However, one year after he nearly died, Allstate debuted its &#8220;Mr. Mayhem&#8221; campaign, his most well-known work.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dean_Winters_didnt_really_want_to_be_the_Mayhem_insurance_guy\"><\/span>Dean Winters didn&#8217;t really want to be the Mayhem insurance guy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Winters almost didn&#8217;t make the Mayhem commercials. First and foremost, he had to relearn how to walk after his medical ordeal. He said that at that point, he felt sorry for himself. Winters had lost two toes, half a thumb, and the tip of his nose had fallen off.<\/p>\n<p>Then a nurse took him to the children&#8217;s burn section. There he saw kids playing soccer with prosthetic legs. That was the turning point in his life, and he decided to relearn how to walk.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues encouraged him, and Denis Leary cast him in Rescue Me. Then Allstate Insurance approached him to play the Mayhem character in their massive advertising campaign. However, Winters initially declined what he later described as &#8220;the best job he&#8217;s ever had.&#8221; In fact, he even responded that he became an actor so he wouldn&#8217;t have to wear a suit and sell insurance! Eventually, his agent convinced him to sign on.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_did_Allstate_decide_to_do_the_Mayhem_commercials\"><\/span>Why did Allstate decide to do the Mayhem commercials?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The advertising agency Leo Burnett created the Mayhem commercials. Burnett executive VP Nina Abnee told Ad Age in 2011 that one of their ideas was &#8220;to kick Flo&#8217;s ass.&#8221; She&#8217;s referring to <a href=\" https:\/\/dev.way.com\/blog\/how-much-does-stephanie-courtney-make-as-flo-from-progressive\/\">Flo from Progressive<\/a>, a hugely successful advertising campaign.
