When it comes to\u00a0the\u00a0economic fallout\u00a0from\u00a0the coronavirus pandemic, few industries have taken a bigger battering than\u00a0the\u00a0airline and\u00a0travel industries\u00a0in the United States.\u00a0While\u00a0it’s still too early to predict the extent of the impact of\u00a0coronavirus on air travel,\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of\u00a0people flying continues\u00a0to plummet\u00a0as does\u00a0the number of planes.\u00a0The\u00a0level 4 travel advisory issued by the government<\/a>\u00a0last month, while absolutely necessary, has further reduced passenger\u00a0travel\u00a0demands\u00a0and forced travelers to cancel their plans for the foreseeable future.\u00a0Let’s try\u00a0and\u00a0get a\u00a0clearer picture\u00a0of what’s going on by taking a look at\u00a0the\u00a0data.\u00a0Here are a few metrics that\u00a0can shed light on the impact coronavirus has\u00a0on\u00a0air travel\u00a0worldwide and in America.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Air<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Air Passenger Traffic has Nosedived\u00a0by 96%<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The number of passengers\u00a0flying\u00a0seems to be\u00a0in\u00a0something of\u00a0a\u00a0tailspin\u00a0over the\u00a0past few weeks.\u00a0Here are the numbers \u2013 on April 14, 2020,\u00a0only 87,534 people passed through\u00a0TSA checkpoints<\/a>, while on the same day last year,\u00a0TSA\u00a0checkpoints recorded 2,208,688 passengers.\u00a0This is a massive decline of almost 96%. April 7, 2020,\u00a0saw\u00a0a record low\u00a0–\u00a097,130 travelers across all U.S. airports,\u00a0the first time in the\u00a0TSA\u00a0history\u00a0the total number of fliers screened\u00a0fell\u00a0below 100,000.\u00a0The current scenario is likely to continue\u00a0until worldwide travel restrictions are rescinded.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Book<\/a><\/p>\n

Almost Half the Planes in America are Grounded\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There are far fewer\u00a0airplanes in the sky now.\u00a0A majority of airlines worldwide have cut capacity by\u00a090%-100%. These include\u00a0some of the major\u00a0international airlines like\u00a0Ryanair,\u00a0BlueAir, Emirates, Oman Air, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific,\u00a0and Singapore Airlines.\u00a0United Airlines has cut 90% of flights in April and May, American Airlines has reduced 75% of international flights through May 6, and Delta has cut 80% international flights and 70% of their network overall.\u00a0Check out the data provided by the flight tracking website\u00a0FlightRadar24<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s approximately a 70% decrease in the number of daily commercial flight operations across the globe.\u00a0Currently, 42% of U.S.\u00a0airlines’\u00a0fleets, are\u00a0grounded, according to data from\u00a0Airlines for America<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Domestic Fares have Become Cheaper\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the one tiny silver lining in these turbulent times. Let’s start by saying, do not fly during a pandemic just because ticket prices have dropped! But the fact is that with demand falling, so have fares. Before the pandemic, on average, a flight from any of the busiest airports in the U.S. would\u00a0cost you at least $309<\/a>\u00a0or more. Now the average ticket cost has decreased to just $163. Now would be a good time to\u00a0pre-book\u00a0tickets for anyone planning on taking a trip later this year,\u00a0or early next year. Do keep in mind that the entire industry is\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0state of flux right now, and airlines may even stop flying to some cities altogether to cut costs. So be sure to check airline refund and cancellation policies before buying your ticket.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Air Travel Will Rebound\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Although the airline industry\u00a0will be severely impacted, it will recover,\u00a0as has been seen<\/a>\u00a0in certain areas where the coronavirus outbreak is\u00a0subsiding.\u00a0The\u00a0desire to travel remains\u00a0unabated indicates\u00a0the extensive\u00a0survey conducted by\u00a0LuggageHero<\/a>.\u00a0The survey shows that 58% of Americans plan to travel between May and September 2020, provided their destinations\u00a0don\u2019t require a mandatory quarantine.\u00a0A\u00a0Harris poll<\/a>\u00a0shows that nearly 24% of respondents are looking forward to traveling once things return to normal.\u00a0The\u00a0CEO\u00a0of the U.S.\u00a0Travel Association, Roger Dow, thinks\u00a0travel will rebound<\/a>, just not as\u00a0speedily\u00a0and not all at once. Most airlines,\u00a0domestic\u00a0and\u00a0international, hope to resume operations in May.\u00a0All of this is good news\u00a0for the industry,\u00a0as is the\u00a0$25 billion in federal payroll assistance,\u00a0which\u00a0will go a long way in helping the beleaguered industry recover.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel hasn’t been totally banned in America as it has been in other parts of the world. The government\u00a0has\u00a0restricted\u00a0non-essential travel\u00a0to\u00a0control the number of patients\u00a0and to prevent\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0our healthcare system. Still, it\u00a0is\u00a0up to individuals to figure out whether the nature of their travel is essential or not. Broadly,\u00a0essential travel includes travels\u00a0undertaken for healthcare, education, or trade\u00a0(cargo\/supply chain),\u00a0and non-essential travel includes recreational\u00a0or\u00a0tourist travel.\u00a0So, decide wisely whether you need to travel or not.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
