P0501 Error Code : Here’s What You Need to Know

Share

Diagnostic trouble codes are of most help when we are actually aware of what each code means. One such code is P0501. “Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance” is what the P0501 error code stands for. Read to know more about P0501.

What is the P0501 code?

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is an electromagnetic sensor that uses a rotating ring to connect to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). It is in the housing of the transmission. Since it is narrow, the reluctant ring can pass through it.

The reluctance ring, on the other hand, keeps the output shaft of the transmission from moving. When the ring goes through the Vehicle Speed Sensor’s electromagnetic tip, the teeth and slots work quickly to complete and break the circuit. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) turns these changes to the circuit into the speed of the vehicle.

Diagnostic code P0501 OBD2 is set when the PCM notices that the information sent by the VSS sensor, which is the vehicle’s speed, is outside the expected range. In excess, it could be high or low. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, which means it applies to all OBD-II vehicles, such as Honda, Proton, Kia, Dodge, Hyundai, VW, and Jeep, etc., but not just those brands. Therefore, even though the steps are general, they may differ for each make/model.

P0501 error code: Causes

Possible reasons why an on-board diagnostic II (OBDII) diagnostic problem code P0501 might show up are:

  • Problem with the VSS sensor’s cables or connections.
  • The vehicle’s speed sensor not functioning.
  • The VSS voltage requirements get inconsistent because the voltage goes up and down faster than the PCM expects.
  • The voltage that comes out of the VSS is lower, and the speed that comes out of the real speed limit is lower than average.
  • A transmission or differential gear supplies power to a lot of VSS. Broken teeth on any gear mess up the VSS signal. The transmission VSS in need of a replacement is a potential cause.
  • The PCM may not be set up right for the size of the car’s tires.

P0501 error code: Symptoms

Here are some things that could go wrong with the P0501 code.

  • RPM (revolutions per minute) limiter getting decreased.
  • The check engine light has been turned on, and the code has been saved in the ECM memory.
  • The anti-lock brakes might not work anymore.
  • The automatic shift might not work as it should.
  • There may be a problem with the speedometer or odometer (or at all).
  • Because the transmission shifts at odd times, the engine may seem to have little power.

How serious is P0501?

P0501 is an error that is easy to find and fix, but if it isn’t fixed right, it can cause a lot of trouble. Code P0501 means that the VSS isn’t working right, which can hurt the transmission and make it hard to shift. The rear-end VSS turns off the ABS light and stops the ABS from working. This gets tricky while driving.

P0501 error code: Diagnosis

P0501 is easy to diagnose. It can be done at a repair shop or on your own. Technicians use scanners to read PCM codes and write down information.

Then, all the cables and plugs that lead to the speed sensor are looked at. Check carefully for broken or exposed wires, melted spots, or other damage. Fix what needs to be fixed. It depends on the car where the sensor is put.

The sensor could be attached to the wheel hub, the rear axle, or the transmission. Check the speed sensor voltage when the cable and connections are fine. But, again, the exact way depends on the material and model of the car.

DTCs are set if the signal is not in the expected range or if it changes too quickly. For example, if the VSS signal changes too quickly (VSS drops to 0 mph and then goes back up to 55 mph when cruising) or if it is out of sync with a WSS signal, DTCs are set (VSS reports 0 MPH while the WSS reports 55 mph).

The performance of the DTC and the range of the VSS could be linked to problems with the circuits, sensors, or mechanical systems to which it is attached.

Circuit and Sensor control

  • Circuit — Check the ECM-VSS circuit first. Between ECM and VSS, the resistance should be 0, and between power and ground, it should be >10k. When the 3-wire VSS is connected, and the ignition is “On,” it should have a reference voltage of 5 V and solid ground.
  • Sensor control – A three-wire VSS can be tested by using a multimeter to find the DC pulse on the signal wire and gently turning the wheels while the wheels are off the ground. One can measure a two-wire VSS by looking for higher AC voltage and faster-moving wheels.

How to fix P0501

This error code is also not too hard to fix, and of course, repairs are based on the diagnosis. These are some of the most fixes:

  • First, the wire connections in the VSS need to be fixed.
  • Second, change the VSS’s transmission or rear end.
  • Third, cleaning the car of any metal bits, clearing the error codes, and taking it for a road test.

Before replacing VSS, one of the most common mistakes people make with this error code is not making sure that the output is bad because of an old sensor. Many people also don’t take off the VSS and check it for metal particles, that could mean there’s a problem with the transaxle or rear axle.

Error Code P0501 should be fixed as soon as possible because jerky shifting can do a lot of damage to the transmission. Also, if the Check Engine light is on, it’s almost always a sign that the car won’t pass the emissions test.
